Graduation Caps!

Project Overview

May 2019

For our Graduation Caps we decided to do something a little different for fun and after seeing some interesting caps online we decided to add some Custom designs and electronics to ours.

CAD:

To begin we measured the caps dimensions and did a simplified mock up in CAD.

For the Mechanical Engineering Cap the corners were the 1st thing that I designed and 3D printed. Thanks to the CAD mock-up it was a one time print and worked perfectly. Next using Inventor's Design Accelerator i designed the gear system for the specifications i wanted. Then the next step was the letters and RoboPup art. For both portions InkScape was used to open the image and the font and converted them both to bitmaps and saved as SVG files. These files were then imported to Fusion 360 and simply extruded and sent to the printer.

For the Psych/Neuro cap we found a clip art of a brain we liked and also converted that to a bitmap in InkScape and then imported the svg into Fusion 360. The file was then edited to have holes and lead dividers for the LEDs so they wouldn't touch and short each other out and finally sent to the printer.

Electronics:

The electronics were rather simple in both cases. The LEDs had to be wired in parallel. and the blinking for the Psych/Neuro hat was a super simple blink code. The electronics for the Mech cap was also a simple set up with parallel connections for the LEDs on each corner and then each corner went to its own pin allowing the rotational light pattern to be done. The continuous servo was a simple line of code to control direction/speed in the setup phase that kept running.
